CBCA WA Make your own story book competition

Each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia WA branch run the Make Your Own Story Book Competition which attracts entries from young people statewide.

The competition is open to all WA students from Pre-Primary to year 8 and individual and school based entries are accepted. Entries close Friday 9th June 2023.

Reading Groups for Kids at your Shire libraries

Book Stars Club 

For 8 to 11 year olds and held on the first Monday of each month at the Margaret River Library, meet at 4pm for a 4.15 start.

During Book Stars we chat about what we have read over the month, give recommendations, and do a book related craft activity.

Book Stars Dates for 2023:

  • 6 November
  • 4 December

Book Chat Club

For kids 12 years and over, held on the last Monday of each month at Margaret River Library, meet at 4pm for a 4.15 start.

Each meeting we discuss about what we have read and give reviews for other members of the club. There is no ‘set’ book – we agree on a genre or theme, and you pick a book that appeals to you.

Book Chat dates for 2023:

  • 24 April
  • 29 May
  • 26 June
  • 31 July
  • 28 August
  • 30 October
  • 27 November

Reading groups are facilitated by a library staff member and refreshments are provided, please advise library staff if you have any dietary requirements. Bookings are not required, simply head to the library at 4pm on these dates. Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Please note reading groups do not meet during school holidays or public holidays, refer to the library school holiday program instead.

Regular children’s programs at your shire libraries

School is starting which means our regular children’s programs resume at your shire libraries.

Baby Rhyme Time, Storytime, Toddler Tales, Book Chat Club and the new Book Stars Club will be starting as the 2023 school term commences.

Baby Rhyme Time: Every Monday starting 30th January at 2.00pm at Margaret River Library

  • For babies up to two years of age and their caregivers, Baby Rhyme Time is a fun place to learn new rhymes and songs to share with your little one.

Storytime: Every Tuesday starting 31st January at 10.15am for 10.30am start at Margaret River Library

  • For children aged two to five years old and their caregivers, Storytime encourages children to discover a love of books, stories, reading and rhymes and promotes family literacy skills.

Book Chat Club: On the last Monday of each month starting Monday 30th January at 4.00pm for a 4.15pm start at Margaret River Library

Make a book in the Book Cubby

Come to the Margaret River Library to make your own “hot dog” book at the Book Cubby. The cubby is a mini maker space for creating your own book so visit the Margaret River Library to either create a book to take home and keep or make one to stay in the Book Cubby and be read by others.

Book into a workshop to get all the skills to make a special “hot dog” book or just come anytime to the cubby to design your own. Best suited to anyone school aged, over 5 years old.

Join local author Ann Basili at the Margaret River Library as she shares her latest book Astara and Erefrey, Goddesses of the realm & the little blue planet. Through fantasy and magic, Ann teaches us to be respectful and take care of our environment by becoming custodians of our own little blue planet.

Best suited to children over 4 years and includes a craft activity. Book purchases and signings will also be available.
