Poetry Performance by Miriam Wei Wei Lo

Thursday 18th January, 6 – 7pm at the Margaret River Library

Miriam will share poetry from her new book ‘Who Comes Calling?’, followed by a conversation style interview with local poet Ana Brawls. Light refreshments will be provided after the talk.

Miriam lived in Margaret River for 11 years (some of you might remember her as Miriam Lochore), and many of the poems in this collection are set in Margaret River.  Her poems are accessible and engaging and should appeal, not only to those who identify with her faith perspective, but also to those who are interested in embodied female experience, to lovers of poetry, and to anyone who likes to ask big questions.

“These are beautifully crafted poems that ask profound questions: Where is home? What does it mean to be a mother? Or a poet? Where is God in the face of inexplicable suffering?” WA Poets Press.

Her first book, Against Certain Capture, was a poetic re-telling of her grandmothers’ lives. It was published by Five Island Press as part of the New Poets 10 series in 2004. It was highly commended in the Anne Elder award and went on to win the Western Australian Premier’s Prize for poetry.

In early 2023 she was awarded a Westerly Mid-Career Fellowship. She teaches creative writing at Sheridan Institute of Higher Education and writes from a faith perspective that remains open to finding common ground with others.

In this workshop, we’ll observe, mimic, and reimagine the movements in nature, especially looking at the stunning flora and fauna found within our southwestern forests, and capture them with our words. And together we’ll transport ourselves into forest territory and recreate the poetry of Karri with pen on paper.

Lakshmi is an emerging Western Australian poet of Indian descent. She is a Centre for Stories fellow and she is also the current Poet-in-Residence at The Wetlands Centre in Cockburn. Her published works appear in—”Social Alternatives”, “Portside Review”, “Burrow Journal”, “The Saltbush Review” and more.
