A straight-talking presentation giving parents and carers information and ideas on how to help a young person to shape their career. Providing participants with the tools they need to assist in career opportunities and employability skills.

  • Provides motivational career tips that a young person can relate to
  • Gives guidance regarding where to find free support and information after the session
  • Offers simple steps to help a youngster reach their desired destination
  • Shares heaps of resources that are easily accessible to enable future career success
  • Provides details on where to access information for Apprenticeships and Traineeships
  • Aims to help maximize a young person’s opportunity to build positive employability skills
  • Explains what a career plan looks like and how to implement an action plan

Aly Bannister is the author of the book titled ‘Get your rear into gear: job searching tips for career success’. She is a dynamic public speaker who will get participants motivated to get careers up and running. A copy of the book is in stock at the Margaret River Library if members would like to dip into it before the event.

For many years, Ros wrote a weekly column for The West Australian which garnered her a wide, devoted readership. A collection of her columns ‘Was it Something I Said?’ was a best seller by UWA Publishing in 2014. In 2021, Ros’s 300-word flash fiction piece How To Leave Your Childhood Behind was awarded winner of Britain’s annual STAUNCH prize against a prominent UK and US shortlist.

Since 2017 Ros has been heavily involved in Aged Care Advocacy and has been an ambassador for Alzheimer’s WA. She has been the sole carer for her mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and has written this fiction novel ‘How to shame the devil’, while spending time in and around nursing homes.

Join Rashida Murphy for this intimate discussion exploring the themes of identity, heritage, history and the growing pains of the migrant experience that form her latest book, ‘The Bonesetter’s Fee and Other Stories’. Rashida’s characters remake lives in shifting terrain where sometimes it is barely possible to speak, let alone be heard and echo unspoken, misremembered and intentionally forgotten events, that ripple across time and place. Alec O’Halloran is the author of ‘The master from Marnpi’, the authorised biography of Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri, a Pintupi man who became an award-winning Papunya Tula artist. Last year marked  the 50th anniversary of the beginning of his exemplary art career at Papunya (NT) in 1971 and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Western Desert art movement, of which Namarari was a founding member and leading exponent. Join us in hearing about Alec’s journey in writing this biography and experiencing his knowledge of this art movement in Australia.

Writing workshops at the Margaret River Library with Dianne Wolfer

Tuesday 9th November, 5 – 6.30pm

Animals who talk: a writing workshop about anthropomorphism

Dianne Wolfer has always loved animal stories. She explored this passion via doctoral research into anthropomorphism in Australian children’s literature. As part of this study, Dianne wrote two award-winning titles; ‘The Shark Caller’ and ‘The Dog With Seven Names’. Both books are Children’s Book Council of Australia Notables with the latter winning the Speech Pathology Award, shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Awards and now published in Chinese. The former is contracted for film.

In this interactive session, Dianne will share practical tips about writing from diverse animal viewpoints. If you love Animal Farm, Call of the Wild, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Black Beauty or Pig the Pug, this workshop is for you. Come along and find out more about writing in this genre. Memoir and history writing workshop

 Everyone has a story to tell. What’s yours? Join Dianne Wolfer as she shares writing skills to help you develop an anecdote, create a memoir and explore history writing methods and techniques.

Dianne is the WA author of 20 books including the ‘Light’ series inspired by the WWI story of an Albany girl signaling to departing soldiers. That story led to three other titles linked to wartime history. Dianne has also written a WWII inspired picture book and children’s novel. The Tribute Tree presents: Free October educational/craft workshop for kids

On Saturday 23 October, Phil Schenberg from SW Reptile Rescues and Education will be talking to kids about our native reptiles, their behaviours and their habitats – and he’ll be bringing along some of those reptiles to display and for hands-on experience.

The team at SW Reptile Rescues and Education do important work to rehabilitate sick and injured reptiles, conduct canine reptile avoidance training, run educational programs, and provide public displays at shows and events. At this workshop, Phil is offering kids the opportunity to lean more about our native reptiles, and to experience them up close.

The presentation will be followed by a craft activity. The workshop is suitable for children aged 7 and up.

Venue: Chapel Gallery

When: 9.30am – 11.30am on Saturday 23 October

Cost: Free! But donations are very welcome.
