National Simultaneous Storytime 2020 – virtually!

To celebrate Library and Information week, Storybox Library has a special online presentation of Emma from the Wiggles reading Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas by Lucinda Gifford for National Simultaneous Storytime!

Have your library barcode ready to click here and log in to Storybox at 11am today for a storytime that is shared by thousands of other children across Australia simultaneously.

You can also find activity sheets and colouring in at the Australian Library and Information Association’s website: www.alia.org.au/nss. 

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event now in it’s 20th year and hosted by the Australian Library and Information Association. Each year a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian artist is read all around the country at the same time in schools, libraries, child care centres and homes everywhere.

We hope you enjoy the story with your child and the opportunity to celebrate fantastic Australian children’s literature.

 

 

Meet Spaced 4 Rural Utopias Artist In Residence Ella Sutherland

Spaced 4: Rural Utopias is a program of residencies and socially engaged art Projects in regional and remote Western Australian communities. Margaret River Library is hosting an information session about the program and introducing the artist in residence, Sydney-based artist Ella Sutherland on Wednesday 18th March, 4-5.30pm.

International Art Space is a leading West Australian arts organisation, presenting a program of ambitious and dynamic socially engaged and context-responsive art. They create diverse and challenging experiences for artists and communities through contemporary visual art.

Spaced 4: Rural Utopias is a multi-year program of residencies and socially engaged art Projects. The program focuses on the idea of “Rural Utopias” and includes 15 artists from Australia, USA, Italy, UK, Austria and Indonesia

As part of this program Sydney-based Artist Ella Sutherland will spend six weeks in Margaret River, starting from the 12th March.  Over the course of her residency, the artist will draw on archival material, print techniques, experimental typography and collaborative working methodologies to develop a collection of forms that will constitute a new 26-character alphabet. The resulting font will be exhibited and reinserted back into circulation in the form of collaboratively developed short texts.

Lily Malone is coming to Augusta Library

Come along and meet successful Cowaramup author Lily Malone. Lily has now written six rural romance stories including her latest novel ‘Last Bridge Before Home’. Her ‘get to know the author’ talks have been very popular at other libraries in the South West and now it’s our turn to welcome our own local talent. She talks about her writing, finding balance with writing and her real life as Anita Donaldson and a bit about the stories themselves. All welcome and the venue is easily accessible.

‘No one was watching’, a talk by Dr Annie Horner

Thursday 12th March, 6 – 7.30pm at Margaret River Library

 ‘No One Was Watching’ provides an alternative, imaginative entree into the once-hidden world of ‘Forgotten Australians’, a cohort of non- Indigenous men and women who were institutionalized as children. As one anonymous care-leaver begged ‘ Let our histories be visible’. The author hopes her book does just that and that these stories remind us of both our individual and collective roles in protecting children and promoting their welfare and safety into the future. Dr Annie Horner (PhD), Alumni of the Edith Cowan University South West campus, launched ‘No One Was Watching’ in May 2019. She will be speaking at the Margaret River Library about her book and presenting her valuable research behind writing her novel.

Author talk by Gary McKay: a unique oral history approach

After 30 years in a distinguished career in the Australian Army, Gary is now pursuing his second career as a full-time writer and freelance historian. He will be talking about his books and how he uses his oral history technique as the basis for his research. Gary is the author of ‘On patrol with the SAS’; ‘Firefighters’, ‘All guts and no glory’, ‘With Healing Hands – The untold story of Australian civilian surgical teams in Vietnam’, ‘Australia’s Battlefields In Viet Nam – A Traveller’s Guide’ and many more.

Three Capes Track Tasmania: a travel talk by Dr Pam Lynch

Four days, three nights, stunning coastline with spectacular dolomite pillars rising in their architectural magnificence from the ocean floor. Autumn colours dripping in the misty rain, silence, a climb to the top of Mt Fortescue, a Lord of the Rings type magical forest, green and mossy and dark and dank and then an unrivaled view as we stood looking down into the abyss where the Southern Ocean meets the Tasman Sea. Where are we?

We’re at the South East corner of Tasmania and we’ve just completed the Three Capes Track walk and we’ve loved every minute. Come and listen as Dr Pam Lynch takes you on a trip along this track in a beautiful part of the country and see what this area of Tasmania has to offer.

It’s Get Online Week!

It’s Get Online Week, and libraries all over Australia are holding events to promote the benefits of getting online, especially for over-50s. These activities are supported by grants from the Federal Government Be Connected initiative, which is administered by the Good Things Foundation.

To celebrate Get Online Week, we’re holding a community lunch at the Margaret River Library (see the previous blog post for details). Unfortunately, the lunch is now fully booked. However, you can still get online or help a friend to get online.

Community lunch @ the Margaret River Library

We are celebrating Get Online Week with a free community lunch at the Margaret River Library at 12 noon on Thursday 17 October. Places are limited so BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL.

The lunch is supported by a grant from the Federal Government Be Connected program. Be Connected is administered by the Good Things Foundation, and aims to encourage over-50s to build on their digital skills.

All the community is welcome, but over-50s are especially invited to attend the lunch.

We’ll be available to answer your questions about getting online, and to demonstrate online resources. All the booked attendees will be given a take-home gift of a USB storage device, pre-loaded with helpful links to encourage them to get online.

Low Impact Living Session 4: an introduction to Beekeeping

An introduction to beekeeping will allow you to familiarise yourself with the craft and practice of beekeeping. In this session, presenter Luke Fulton, will explain:

  • Getting set up
  • Keeping it lawful
  • How to harvest your honey
