Community Writing Group

The Community Writing Group meets at the library once a month. The group is free to join and open to anyone looking for a tribe to write with. This third session is a ‘Writing night’ so bring along your writing gear.

The Community Writing Group aims to provide participants with:

  • motivation to write
  • writing support
  • opportunity to share knowledge and skills
  • writing exercises
  • writing feedback

The Battle of Crete, a talk with Bill Bunbury, Poli Tataraki and Michael Winters

Wednesday 1st May, 1 – 2.30pm at the Margaret River Library

Into the Moonlit Village is a collaborative book of poetry and art about the Battle of Crete by Poli Tataraki and Michael Winters. In ways that commemorate and lament the sacrifices made, this presentation will showcase how poetry and linocuts sensitively combine to convey how ANZAC soldiers and the local population grappled on Crete with the Nazi invasion. You will hear selected readings by the poet as you view projections of the corresponding linocut images. Both poet and artist will also share their artistic journeys.

Bill Bunbury will talk briefly on the battle of Crete and conduct a question and answer session with the author.

Into the Moonlit Village presents strange phenomena co-existing in the ancient landscape of Crete, such as shepherds and paratroops, swastikas and Minoan frescoes. In this setting the exhausted and under-equipped Australian soldiers seem to be coming of age under the benign gaze of the Bull, transplanted into an ancient land to fight against a brutal cutting-edge technology. You will gain insight into a book which serves equally well as an introduction to the Battle of Crete, or as an extension for the seasoned reader looking to be surprised by something completely unprecedented.

A little about the presenters: Poli is Dubbo-based and born in Rethymno, Crete. Her maternal family is from Gerakari village, Rethymno, (Amari Valley). This village was a very important Resistance hub during the occupation and suffered the devastating effects of the Kedros Holocaust.Β  Michael Winters is Canberra-based with a prolific Battle of Crete output. He is also a philhellene with a long relationship with Greece and is an Honorary Citizen of Leros. Local identity, Bill Bunbury is an experienced interviewer from ABC radio fame who asks the tricky and interesting questions. All welcome.

The Cocoon Gallery for Emerging Artists Welcomes Victoria Robertson

Mixed Media

Mixed Media is the first solo exhibition by emerging artist Victoria Robertson.

Originally from Amsterdam, Robertson’s work is inspired by the pristine West Australian coastline. Victoria creates miniature shadow box settings, and she uses textile technics to create embroidered spheres and tapestry.

“Ever since I was very young, I have been fascinated with miniature things such as doll houses and shadow boxes,” she says.

A teacher for the past 32 years, Robertson’s new exhibition brings a small selection of what she makes.

‘Withing some of the shadow boxes are some mini embroidered balls – see if you can find them all!” she teases.

Exhibition continues until the end of April.

The Margaret River Library is an accessible venue.

 

Author Talk by Adventurer, Rob Turner

Rob Turner has lived (and survived) an adventurous life which culminated in self publishing Home the Hard Way. It is the story of his attempted world circumnavigation (1992/95) starting from Sydney, and thwarted in Saudi ArabiaΒ  and the enforced return to Perth against the prevailing winds and currents in his 7.1 metreΒ  yacht. De-masting, skipper overboard, pirates, strandings and near misses with massive ships are just some of the adventures which make this a fascinating talk.

Born in, and spending his early youth in northern Tasmania, Rob Turner has always loved adventure, tackling and surviving much more than most. Scuba diver, shipwreck finder, charter pilot and chief flying instructor, former world aerobatic spin record holder and international solo sailor are just some of his experiences in a long and exciting life. Now retired and β€˜slowing down’ a little, Rob lives in the small seaside town of Dunsborough, near his family. When not indulging in, amongst other things, his love of writing books or poetry, he especially delights in teaching his two youngest grandchildren the joys of snorkelling and exploring with them in the wonders of the underwater world.

Invitation to the Launch of the Cocoon Gallery Exhibition By Yude Mahendri

We Welcome Yude Mahendri to The Cocoon Gallery for Emerging Artists

The community is invited to help us celebrate the exhibition titled “New Place”, by Yude Mahendri

Thursday 8th February, 5.30pm – 6.30pm

The exhibition will be formally opened by local artist, Dea Haddow and light refreshments will be provided.

Yude presents beautiful landscapes of the Augusta area, both river and sea views. She has recently completed the Certificate IV in Visual Art at the Margaret River Tafe and attended the Albany Summer School to hone her skills. Her work is mainly in oils but she is experimenting with mixed media and a few of these are also on display. All works are for sale through the artist. The exhibition continues until the end of February.
