Author talk by Faye Bohling

A MEMOIR OF A WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GIRL – FAYE BOHLING

Faye will be speaking at the Margaret River Library on Thursday 25th October, 6 – 7:30pm

Light refreshments provided. Please RSVP by 24th October to:

amrlibrary@amrshire.wa.gov.au or Ph: 9780 5600

Set in Perth, Western Australia, during the closing stages of World War II, first-time author Faye Bohling has written an autobiography of her life that is full of passion. Faye tells her story of a ten-year-old child, given up by her mother to a Catholic home for wayward women and about-to-be unmarried mothers. But there is a marked difference between schoolgirl Faye and the other wards. She should never have been there, as she was a child in an adult environment and where she received no schooling and was put to work in the institutions laundry. After meeting her soul mate, and being happily married for seven years, tragedy struck in 1964, when her husband drowned in a fishing accident at Ledge Point, north of Perth. They were expecting their fourth child. When her children were older Faye accepted a challenge; stepped a long way from her comfort zone and spent the next ten years as a promoter and fund raiser of prestigious Miss Australia Quest, which was at that time, the main fund-raising initiative for the support of people with cerebral palsy. The story continues against a vividly described backdrop of “Perth back then” – Perth of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Streets such as Newcastle, Aberdeen, and stores like Re Store, Eziwalkin Shoes, Boans, Bairds, Charles Moore and Co. The Capitol Theatre and other Perth icons.

Sensory Storytime is coming to Margaret River Library Wednesday 17th October

Margaret River Library is very excited to offer families in the Shire the opportunity to experience Sensorium Theatre’s Sensory Storytime, when the company visits the area in October 2018.

Sensorium Theatre’s mission is to spark the imaginations of children with disability by creating needs-tailored multi-sensory theatre and storytelling experiences. Since 2010, Sensorium has toured extensively, state-wide and nationally, delighting thousands of children. In 2015, Sensorium creatives delivered a heralded season at the Sydney Opera House and in 2018 they hit the international stage with tours to the Lincoln Centre, New York and the Artground, Singapore.

Inspired by the State Library of WA’s Better Beginnings Initiative, the program is for children aged 3-7 and focuses on putting narrative to music and connecting themes to a range of sensory experiences. Sensorium’s unique approach gives children plenty of time to absorb content and can increase understanding and enjoyment. Story being presented is “Wombat Stew” by Marcia K. Vaughan & Pamela Lofts.

Registration essential as places are limited. Priority of place to families with a child with disability. Siblings welcome.
