Get Online and #Try1Thing to win $100 gift voucher to a local restaurant

Thanks to the Federal Government Be Connected program, we are celebrating Get Online Week with a great competition and a free lunch at the Margaret River Library.

If you’re over 50, you could win one of several $100 vouchers to local restaurants.

If you’re under 50, you could help a Senior friend to enter (and possibly be invited out to dinner if they win!)

To enter:

  1. Get Online and register with Be Connected, selecting the Margaret River Library as your centre, and
  2. #Try1Thing – complete any one of these 5-minute online tasks:
    • Finish an exercise from the Topic List in the Be Connected website, or
    • Visit the library catalogue and place a Hold on an item, or
    • Download an e-book or e-audiobook from cloudLibrary.

To be eligible to win, you must be a library member, register with Be Connected, and be over 50. One entry per person.

Once you’ve registered with Be Connected and completed one online task, there are several ways you can enter:

  • Complete and submit an entry form at the Margaret River or Augusta Library, or
  • Email your name, phone number, and the task you completed to amrlibrary@amrshire.wa.gov.au, or
  • Comment (or reply to) on this blog post with your name, phone number, and the task you completed.

Entries close at  6pm Wednesday 17th October.

All winners will be drawn at a celebratory lunch at the Margaret River Library. Winners will be notified directly afterwards (and do not have to attend the lunch).

The Get Online Week celebratory lunch at the Margaret River Library will be held from 12 – 1pm on Thursday 18th October. The whole community is invited to attend, but places are limited so RSVP is essential. Call 9780 5600 to book your place.

Low Impact Living Session 5: The Future of Solar Housing by Peter Little

Thursday 4th October, 6 – 7:30pm at the Margaret River Library

Peter Little will be presenting a personal perspective on solar housing based on his 50 years experience, researching, designing and constructing solar projects throughout Western Australia’s climatic zones. He has been involved in housing research for the WA building industry, State and Federal Governments, joint research for the Solar Energy Research Institute of Western Australia and the State Energy Development Office. His associated works are recorded in the official history of Solar Energy in Australia. His family certified organic farming enterprise in Karridale was the recipient of 2004 Western Australian Environment award and a 2005 Banksia award—Australia’s highest environmental award. His talk will be broken into three parts:

Section one: The contexts for solar housing including the environment, housing , product innovation and technology.

Section two: What we can learn from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

Section three: Case studies from the 1970’s, 1980’s and the 2000’s

We hope you had a wonderful Children’s Book Week

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Libraries are celebrating Children’s Book Week for the whole month of August! Children’s Book Week is an annual event whereby all around the country schools, libraries, bookshops, authors, illustrators and storytellers celebrate the fantastic array of children’s books that are produced in Australia.

The award winning Children’s Book of the Year  titles and shortlisted books are on display at the Margaret River Library for you view. You can find the whole list of Australia’s most influential children’s literary awards, which is divided up into 6 categories, on the Children’s Book Council of Australia website.

Author Sian Turner and illustrator Rebecca Cool will present sessions together, the first time an author and illustrator have co-presented at our libraries, for local primary school students. Sian and Rebecca will talk to us about their recently published title Can I come too, Eliza-Lou? a beautiful book full of delightful text and stunning artwork. The sessions at Margaret River library and Augusta Primary School Library on the 29th August are already booked out, with students from Margaret River Primary, Montessori Primary, St Thomas More Catholic Primary, Karridale Primary and Augusta Primary schools in addition to homeschooled families coming to listen to Sian and Rebecca talk about how they have created their recent book, published by Wild Eyed Press.

Low Impact Living Session 3: getting the basics right

Thursday 9th August at Margaret River Library, 6 – 7:30pm

Do you love to make your own food? Are you looking to reduce your waste and become more connected to the food that you eat? Then this session could very well be for you! Three passionate makers will share their knowledge and passion for food through a session focused on the process of getting the basics right. During our Getting the Basics Right demonstration our makers will show how easy it is to create a range of the basics including:

Homemade Yogurt in the Easiyo

Healthy No Bake Brownie Bites

Homemade Muesli

Sourdough Bread

Speed date an architect. The new way to learn sustainable design.

Those wanting to make their homes more environmentally-friendly have the chance to meet a number of architects at a free ‘speed-dating’ session.  In a 10 minute ‘date’ with at least two designers of participant’s choice, you can ask questions about sustainable design, get feedback on prospective plans, or seek inspiration for a future project with no obligation to see the designer again.

Margaret River Youth Precinct Launch event, Sunday 3 June

The official launch for the Margaret River Youth Precinct is on this Sunday, 3pm – 7pm with live music, laser tag, face painting, Radrock ropes course, food van alley, skateboarding WA clinic, bowl comp, art activities, basketball comp, bouncy castle and Reconciliation Week activities.

There will be a pre-launch event for everyone wanting to hear how skate parks create resilient communities. Council Chambers, this Sunday: 1.30pm-2.30pm
