Poetry Workshop with Lakshmi Kanchi

Friday 23rd June, 10am – 12pm

In this workshop, we’ll observe, mimic, and reimagine the movements in nature, especially looking at the stunning flora and fauna found within our southwestern forests, and capture them with our words. She will share some lovely examples that have the wind of flight and movement clearly observable in their choice of words and phrases. And together we’ll transport ourselves into forest territory and recreate the poetry of Karri with pen on paper.

Lakshmi is an emerging Western Australian poet of Indian descent. She is a Centre for Stories fellow and she is also the current Poet-in-Residence at The Wetlands Centre in Cockburn. Her published works appear in—”Social Alternatives”, “Portside Review”, “Burrow Journal”, “The Saltbush Review” and more.

Light refreshments provided. Seats are limited for this workshop so please RSVP to Email: amrlibrary@amrshire.wa.gov.au or Ph: 9780 5600, or use Eventbrite here: https://amrlibraries-poetry-workshop.eventbrite.com.au

The Three Well Known Australians Exhibition at the Margaret River Library

The Margaret River Library welcomes the touring exhibition by Sydney artist, Martin Shaw. His painting titled ‘Three Well Known Australians’ is on display in the Library until Friday 21st April.

Martin painted the ‘Three Well Known Australians’ in 1982 and created a guessing game that has engaged generations ever since. The painting has been touring the country since 1983.

Visitors to the library are encouraged to view the painting and add their opinion on who each character in the painting represents. These lists of opinions become yearbooks that travel with the exhibition and past books are also on display.

Martin has asked a wide variety of Australians to send in letters over the years, with their suggestions of who might be represented in the painting and 36 of these letters are on display to the public. Mark McGowan and Cathy Freeman are examples of two famous people who have written letters that are currently on display.

Are you over 50 and need help with technology?

For the second time running we are partnering with Margaret River High School to deliver the Young Mentors Program. Please register your interest to be contacted regarding dates and times the program will run.

The Be Connected Young Mentors program supports older Australians to improve their digital skills by bringing them together with young people in a mentoring capacity, to share digital skills and knowledge.

Image of an older person and a younger person in looking at a computer.

The Young Mentors are trained in how to mentor older people, then fully supervised as they deliver the weekly sessions.

The one-to-one sessions are fun, informal and tailored to cover topics older people would like to learn. Participants can use their own devices, so the new skills they learn can be put into practice straight away.

The Young Mentors program offers a wealth of benefits to all participants. Older people can improve digital literacy, learn essential life skills and develop a deeper sense of community while the young mentors can develop leadership, communication, problem-solving skills… and much more.

Learning together can change lives.

Register your interest now by contacting: abrawls@amrshire.wa.gov.au or contacting the library on 08 9780 5600.
