ABIA award-winning, best-selling author Rachael Johns is promoting her recently published novel Lost Without You. It is a fresh and poignant novel of family, journeys, past decisions … and four women, one dress, and the secret that binds them all…
Rachael Johns, an English teacher by trade and a mum 24/7, is the author of The Patterson Girls and a number of other romance and women’s fiction books including The Art of Keeping Secrets and The Greatest Gift. She is currently Australia’s leading writer of contemporary relationship stories around women’s issues, a genre she has coined ‘life-lit’. Set in Perth, Western Australia, during the closing stages of World War II, first-time author Faye Bohling has written an autobiography of her life that is full of passion. Faye tells her story of a ten-year-old child, given up by her mother to a Catholic home for wayward women and about-to-be unmarried mothers. But there is a marked difference between schoolgirl Faye and the other wards. She should never have been there, as she was a child in an adult environment and where she received no schooling and was put to work in the institutions laundry. After meeting her soul mate, and being happily married for seven years, tragedy struck in 1964, when her husband drowned in a fishing accident at Ledge Point, north of Perth. They were expecting their fourth child. When her children were older Faye accepted a challenge; stepped a long way from her comfort zone and spent the next ten years as a promoter and fund raiser of prestigious Miss Australia Quest, which was at that time, the main fund-raising initiative for the support of people with cerebral palsy. The story continues against a vividly described backdrop of “Perth back then” – Perth of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Streets such as Newcastle, Aberdeen, and stores like Re Store, Eziwalkin Shoes, Boans, Bairds, Charles Moore and Co. The Capitol Theatre and other Perth icons.
Join us in the Cocoon Gallery for Emerging Artists for the launch of an exhibition of early works by local artist Bethany Treanor
‘These works have been completed over the past 20 years. I used my drawing time as a meditative process as I raised my three children over the years. Using Sennelier oil sticks and Mont Martre oil pastels I found the fine details and gentle blending of the medium to be a time of quiet contemplation. Representing themes of water, life, sun, moon and stars, I use colour and detail to capture the emotion of the moment when I engaged with an item or land / sea / moonscape. Currently I am enrolled at South West TAFE in Margaret River completing my Visual Arts Diploma with an eye to attend ECU next year to complete my Bachelor of Visual Arts. Thank you for your support and interest in my works both now and in the future.’ Bethany Treanor
