Happy Children’s Book Week Everyone!

Every year, all over Australia, we celebrate Children’s Book Week to highlight the many fantastic books for youth that are produced in this country. 

Children’s Book of the Year has also announced during this week and our libraries have the shortlisted and winning books on display for you to request.

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Libraries also celebrate Children’s Book Week by inviting an award winning author or illustrator to visit our libraries and speak to local school students.

This year, thanks to our sponsors The State Government of Western Australia through the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries and the Children’s Book Council of Australia WA branch, author Kylie Howarth will be presenting at Margaret River and Augusta libraries on Wednesday 28th August to students from St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Margaret River Montessori School, Karridale Primary School, Augusta Primary School and Home School families.


Kylie has written and illustrated over 11 books for children of all ages and recently won the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards Writers Fellowship and was shortlisted for SCBWI Australian Picture Book Illustrators Award, CBCA Book of the Year Awards, WAYRBA and the YABBA awards.

WA Regional Poetry Showcase at the Margaret River Library

“Reflections on the Bard of Bengal”

“Let your life lightly dance on the edges of time like dew on the tip of a leaf.”

Join us for an intimate and enriching afternoon as we delve into the timeless legacy of the great Bard of Bengal, Rabindranath Tagore, presented by the esteemed international Bengali poet, columnist, and translator, Tanmoy Chakraborty.

The event will feature:

  • Engaging Presentations: Get to know Tagore and his poetry, providing insights into their timeless relevance and beauty. The show will feature rare glimpses of Tagore’s life and legacy in photos and film.
  • Poetry Readings and Reflections: Experience Tanmoy’s own poetic creations, deeply influenced by Tagore’s, and listen to the exquisite, sweet-sounding Bengali language.
  • Interactive Q&A: Facilitated by the talented Lakshmi Kanchi, this session will allow the audience to engage directly with Tanmoy, exploring the themes and inspirations behind his works and Tagore’s lasting impact.

The WA Regional Poetry Showcase is an inaugural Perth Poetry Festival initiative where we showcase international festival guests in Regional WA, and Margaret River Library is proud to facilitate this exchange.

Who was Rabindranath Tagore, the Bard of Bengal?

We Mean Business – A Platform For Success Workshop

In this 2 hour workshop Ali Bannister presents an energised, positive presentation guiding new and curious entrepreneurs on how to build their own business. This event is free and light refreshments will be provided.

Author talk by Ann Basili

Join us in the celebration of Ann’s new book titled ‘By Divine Instruction: Lessons In Metaphysical Healing. A Guided Healing Handbook’.

Calling anyone over 50 years old who may need help with technology!

 

There is still time for Senior Learners to register for Young Mentors.

For the third time running we are partnering with Margaret River Senior High School to deliver the Young Mentors Program starting on Wednesday 7th August 2024.

The program supports older Australians to improve their digital skills by bringing them together with young people in a mentoring capacity, to share digital skills and knowledge

The one-to-one sessions are fun, informal and tailored to cover topics older people would like to learn. Participants can use their own devices, so the new skills they learn can be put into practice straight away. Some devices are available if learners want to have a go, but do not have the resources.

The Young Mentors program offers a wealth of benefits to all participants. Older people ­­can improve digital literacy, learn essential life skills and develop a deeper sense of community while the young mentors can develop leadership, communication, problem-solving skills… and much more.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Emma Trelle no longer will be attending the Perth Poetry Festival .

We are working with the festival for a possible new performance for the Regional Showcase.

Margaret River Library is thrilled to be hosting the WA Regional Poetry Showcase with Emma Trelles.

Join us for a warm and inviting afternoon celebrating Emma’s beautiful poetry. This event offers a wonderful chance to enjoy Emma’s works and delve into her creative journey. This session will feature a selection of her poems woven into a relaxed conversation, giving you insights into her poetry practice and experiences. At the end, the stage will be open for your questions, allowing you to chat directly with Emma. Don’t miss this special opportunity to connect with a talented US Poet Laureate!

Celebrating 40 Years of Medicare

The Margaret River Library is showing a display celebrating Medicare’s 40th anniversary.

40 years ago, Medicare was introduced in Australia to help everyone access a wide range of health and hospital services at low or no cost.

To celebrate, the Department of Health and Aged Care has launched a pop-up display in libraries across Australia to showcase the 40-year history of Medicare and provide information about current Medicare services available. Visit our library and check out the historical display.

The display will be on view to the public during library open hours, until the end of August and the Library is easily accessible.

Augusta Library will be Open 9am – 11am on Thursday 25th July

Then remain closed for the rest of the day. This is due to Water Corporation pipe upgrades in the library area. Toilets and water facilities will not be available.

From Planning to Findings: Research as Connection and a Trip to Brazil

Friday 26th July, 10.30 – 11.30am at the Margaret River Library

Ana Brawls was the recipient of the Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund from Writers Victoria and The Myer Foundation earlier this year. In preparing for her next novel, Ana chose to research on location in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo visiting Libraries, Museums and Institutes preserving heritage and culture. In this presentation Ana talks about:

  • the journey with photos to support her research and what she discovered
  • the institutions preserving history and the resources both new and historical
  • methods for collating the information that will be used in her next novel
  • lessons learned and the serendipity in coming across information
