The Cocoon Gallery for Emerging Artists Welcomes Margaret Affleck

Treasures of nature: an exhibition by Margaret Affleck

1 September – 31 October 2020

Emerging artist Margaret Affleck studied art at high school and used her drawing skills to illustrate her science projects and field studies in Year 12 Biology. However, in her career she followed her love of music, studying in London and Adelaide to become a music teacher.
Now in her retirement, Margaret has resumed her interest in painting and has studied with art teachers in Perth and attended many workshops with interstate and international artists. Margaret has a multi-purpose studio for both art and music.
This selection of watercolour paintings developed from the artist’s love of the native flora of Western Australia reflecting the artist’s desire to establish a connection with her new bush block home in Margaret River.
She has recorded the species of trees and bushes around her home and is currently working on the wildflowers that grow among the Jarrah and Marri vegetation. All works are for sale through the artist.

The Cocoon Gallery for Emerging Artists is located at the entrance to the Margaret River Library and is easily accessible. For the latest open times visit the library blog  here.

Dementia Friendly Margaret River

bay end with distance

The libraries are friendly, easily accessible and comfortable places to spend some time when out and about in the community.

As well as being dementia friendly places to visit, the Margaret River and Augusta Libraries provide resources that can assist people living with dementia, inform their family and friends and their carers. Pop in to say hello and just ask if you need a hand to find what you are looking for.

The Dementia Friendly Town project, an initiative of Alzheimer’s WA, empowers rural communities to support people living with dementia to live as well as possible for as long as possible. With support from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the local Rotary and Lions Clubs, Alzheimer’s WA has worked with the local community, including businesses, in a whole of town approach to becoming dementia friendly.

Videos made during the project highlight how we can all help to enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia in our town. Alzheimer’s WA has kindly given permission to use the Margaret River videos available online at www.alzheimerswa.org.au “Copyright to Alzheimer’s WA 2020”

Children’s Week WA Book Project

The Book Project encourages all WA children aged 0-12 years to collaborate and connect with other children from across the state. This is an opportunity for participants of all backgrounds and abilities to be represented in a book made for children, by children. The Book Project investigates the Rights of Children and what this looks like to them. With the added opportunity of becoming a published Author/Illustrator, it’s a perfect rainy day activity!

Supported by WA Children’s Book Author & Illustrator, Briony Stewart, elements selected from multiple children’s entries from each region will be crafted together into one cohesive story. Then compiled into three books representing the age groups 0-4, 5-8 & 9-12 years, to be published, printed and distributed throughout the state.

To enter:

  1. Head to the Children’s Week WA Book Project Page
  2. Download the Story Pack for your Region and Age Group
  3. Complete the Entry Form and submit your work by Midnight, 31st August 2020
  4. Join us on Facebook Live on Wednesday 28th October, from 10am to see if you have been featured in the books!

Entries open 13 July – 31 August 2020. All selected entries will be listed as co-author/illustrators and sent a FREE copy of their Children’s Book! 🤩

The 2020 Children’s Week Book Project is proudly supported by LotteryWest and Healthway promoting the Go for 2 & 5 message.
