CoderDojo not meeting this Friday 1st March

Due to several schools having a pupil free day this Friday, there will be NO CoderDojo this week.

We hope you all have a fantastic long weekend holiday and we look forward to seeing our CoderDojo Ninjas on Friday the 8th of March!

For those who may be unfamiliar with Coderdojo…

CoderDojo is part of a world-wide movement of free, volunteer-run coding clubs that help local youth (aged 7 – 17) to develop digital literacy skills in an inclusive, respectful and friendly social environment. The Margaret River CoderDojo usually meets at 4pm every Friday during school term.

The Margaret River Library supports the club by providing the meeting space, computing facilities, and other technology.

Since its launch in early 2017, the club has worked with robotics, digital art, 3D printing, and much more. The Ninjas sometimes work together in groups to complete projects, and at other times follow their own individual interests.

To do ‘when I come to be old’

Working at the library provides the opportunity to discover surprising gems, which we love to share with our community. One such treasure currently circulating is Lists of Note by Shaun Usher.

Flicking through this eclectic collection of historical lists, we found Jonathon Swift’s (author of Gulliver’s Travels) to-do list, for ‘When I come to be old’.

Written in 1699, the list outlines Swift’s advice to his older self, and includes such gems as (in the original spelling):

  • Not to marry a young woman
  • Not to keep young company unless they reely desire it
  • Not to be peevish, or morose, or suspicious
  • Not to tell the same Story over and over to the same People
  • Not to scorn present Ways, or Wits, or Fashion, or Men, or War, etc
  • Not to talk much, nor of my self
  • Not to boast of my former beauty, or strength, or favor with Ladyes, etc

Swift was 32 when he created the list, and lived to be nearly 80 – we wonder whether he followed his own advice!

Writers at any career stage who struggle with establishing and maintaining a regular writing practice will benefit from this free 3 hour workshop hosted by Annabel Smith
The workshop delves into the thoughts and feelings that hold us back from achieving our potential as writers such as self-doubt, fear of rejection and criticism, procrastination, perfectionism, lack of resilience/staying power.
• Understand the beliefs that hold you back from achieving your potential as a writer
• Become familiar with strategies and frameworks for overcoming self-limiting behaviours around writing
• Practice with tools that will empower you to continue to build confidence and proactivity on an ongoing basis

Exhibition continues from February 6th – March 30th

“My style of painting is based on realism and represents Australian landscapes that have drawn me to them emotionally and challenged me to record their beauty.  All paintings are hand drawn by me from reference materials and photos. I work in acrylics and oils and enjoy mixing my own colour pallets to identify with nature and its moods.

I began painting after I retired and after completing several units at TAFE. I studied under well-known local artist Peter Scott for several years, whose style of painting I really admire. Some of the framed paintings are for children and represent Australian animals that are not easily seen, on backgrounds of where you might find them.”

Chinese Year of the Pig Lantern making workshop

Date:  Tuesday 29th January  Time: 5 — 7 pm

Join us to make paper lanterns to use for decorations in the library on 5th February for Chinese New Year Celebrations. Fun for the whole family. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to demonstrate how to fold the paper lanterns. Leave them with us and see the library transformed for Chinese New Year. This activity is suitable for children aged 5+ and parents must stay.
