New Books on Feminism

Feminism is more than a movement for women’s right to work and vote.
It’s the teenage girl in the faraway country dreaming to walk freely, the elderly women sharing her wisdom without fear of being chastised, the young woman getting to work in whatever job she feels suited to and getting paid accordingly.
Learn a bit more about one of the most influential social movements of the twenty-first century with this week’s New Books. If you are visiting the library, our New Books Display is back on, with a bigger selection to chose from.

Learn how to use myGov!

Link to Be Connected mygov courses

Be Connected has launched a new topic to help older Australians learn how to access government services and information online.

The new training module teaches learners how to set up a myGov account, make Medicare claims and link to other critical government services.

In addition to this, learners will gain a better understanding of how two-factor authentication works, and how to retrieve information through the myGov inbox.

This resource is free for all the community, and there is no need to create a Be Connected account to access it (although you can create an account if you want to track your progress).

There are 5 courses to work through under this topic. Start with All About MyGov and work your way through at your own pace.

Preparing well ahead of that overseas holiday!

Overseas travel may seem far away, but in the meantime you can be working towards making that long-awaited holiday even better by learning the language of the locals – something that is generally appreciated wherever you may go. Encourage the whole family to learn with you, and perhaps have some theme dinners where you practise your new skill together!

Transparent Language Online (TLO) offers 24/7 access to personalised language courses, and is free with your library membership.

There are too many languages to list here – from French to Swahili, we’re certain you’ll find exactly the language you’re looking for. Learn on your PC or download the app to your mobile device.

If English isn’t your first language, you can also tailor an English course to meet your specific needs.

Have your library card handy and click here to go to our Lifelong Learning page, where you’ll find more information about TLO, and a link to the site.

New series: The Hunt for Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher is a mysterious loner who passes through strange towns, sketchy diners and dark back alleys.  On his travels, he frequently avenges the weak and rights wrongs. His adventures are always enthralling, and known to be popular even with people who don’t usually like to read!

You might already be a casual reader of Lee Child’s thrillers featuring Jack Reacher – or perhaps you are a fan of the series and have read all his adventures from the very first book (Killing Floor, published in 1997) right up to the 24th installment: Blue Moon.

The First Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor by Lee Child.

If you’re wondering whether this series is for you, or if you would like to revisit some of the stories, have a look at our Jack Reacher collection. You can find all 24 installments in print, with some titles also available in e-book and e-audiobook format:

We also have good news for those of you who have read them all – if you would like to look at Jack Reacher from a different angle, you can do so via Diane Capri’s series Hunt for Jack Reacher. The series was published with Lee Child’s permission, and is available on cloudLibrary.

Licensed to Thrill is a bundle featuring the first three books in a nine-books series. Click on the picture below to check it out:

Celebrating Earth Day with Beamafilm

Earth Day is usually celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year, the date slipped by while many of the world’s people were in lockdown or suffering deep personal stress.

You can still access a wide range of films and documentaries about climate and the environment, and celebrate a belated Earth Day at home, with Beamafilm. Your library membership gives you free access to a vast range of titles with an ‘Earth’ theme. Here is a small sample of what’s available:

Have your membership number handy, and click here to go directly to Beamafilm.

Or click here to find out more about Beamafilm and Kanopy – our other movie-streaming service, which is also available free to library members.

Are things back to ‘normal’ at the library?

We are now in our 3rd week since the Margaret River Library re-opened its doors to the public. How time flies!

As State and Federal government directions change, so do we… From this week we were allowed to increase our maximum onsite numbers from 20 to 100 people, and the place is starting to hum again 😊

Some things are going back to ‘normal’ while some things have become the ‘new normal’ – and some things are sort of in-between and likely to change over time!

Here is an update on our current procedures:

  • Click & Collect is still available for patrons who prefer this method of delivery. Come to the back door and ring the bell – staff will bring your items to you.
  • We are also inviting our community to visit again via the front entry and say ‘hello!’ when returning or picking up items.
  • Items on Hold can be collected from within the library – just like you used to be able to do. If your item has a red bookmark, that means you need to check it out to yourself at the SmartServe (we’ll show you how if you’re feeling a bit rusty!)
  • Everybody who enters the building is required to provide contact details so it is really helpful if you have your library card with you.
  • All are reminded to sanitise their hands on entry and maintain social distancing (1.5m) – and please stay home if you are feeling at all unwell.
  • We offered a 3 month loan period during the closure, however since we’ve re-opened, items are currently given a 5 week loan period. If you have items that were given a 3 month loan period and you’ve finished with them, please return them soon because others may be waiting for them. Items that are more than 30 days overdue incur an admin fee, so if you are having difficulty getting in, please call us! 9780 5600
  • We are continuing to offer an ‘over-60s only’ session every Wednesday morning at the Margaret River Library from 10am to 12pm (but everybody is welcome after 12pm!)
  • Click & Collect is available from Augusta Library even though their doors are not yet open, and wifi is available from outside the library. Please click here for the latest information about opening times.

Finally, we want to say a big THANK YOU to our community for your continuing patience, compassion and concern for each other’s welfare. We are indeed ‘all in this together’ and we are grateful to have your support as we continue to deliver our library service. Stay safe and sane!

Talk about race and resilience

We shouldn’t shy away in moments of great divide and confusion – instead we must be compassionate and try to understand the suffering of others in order to build resilience in our world!
