Staff picks for 2020

The dystopian landscape created by a pandemic won’t come to mind when we all look back to 2020. Instead, the fantastic, unique, escaping world of books is what we will remember! (imagine a smiley emoji right here).

With that in mind, we decided to curate a selection of our library staff’s most memorable reads for this year. As always, it was a challenge to select one title per person; but you know, we are librarians, we can do anything. (another emoji)

A boy and his Dog at the end of the world by C A Fletcher. All systems red by Martha Wells Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell Among the selection we have A boy and his dog at the end of the world  by C. A. Fletcher Bruny by Heather Rose (no surprises here), The bees by Laline Paull,  Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, and the fascinating sci-fi All Systems Red by Martha Wells

The bees by Laline Paull The Choke by Sophie Laguna There was still love by Favel Parrett True West by David Whish-Wilson

There was still love by Favel Parrett, The Choke by Sophie Laguna and True West by David Whish-Wilson, were also selected as stunning and memorable reads.

A bad day for sunshine by Darynda Jones Honeybee by Craig Silvey The summer house by James Patterson

The suspense thriller A bad day for sunshine, and the new Australian classic Honeybee by Craig Silvey are also among our list.

We end this list with an ebook recommendation, the family drama Monogamy by Sue Miller, which is available on OverDrive or BorrowBox

Now its your turn, tell us what is your favourite book for 2020?

PS: If you like to read in e-format,  search for these titles on CloudLibrary, OverDrive or BorrowBox

Who else writes like my favourite author?

Here is a great (free!) tool to help you discover more authors who write the type of story you enjoy: Literature Map!

It’s simple to use – go to the site and type in the name of your favourite author:

Click the search button and you’ll then be presented with a map of authors. The closer authors are to each other on the map, the more similar their styles are – so look for the names closest to your favourite author.

Once you’ve identified a new author you’d like to try, click here to go to our catalogue, enter the author’s name and click search to find titles to borrow.

If you’re new to using the catalogue, click here for assistance. Happy reading!
