Free digital confidence workshops

In a new initiative, Shire of Augusta Margaret River Libraries has partnered with NBN™ Community Ambassador Ashley Merrett to deliver a series of workshops to help improve the digital skills of our community. There are six sessions that will cover a range of topics:

October 22, 10am to 11:30am – NBN 101, understand the role NBN is playing in keeping us connected

November 3, 10 – 11.30am – What is ‘the Cloud’?

November 18, 2 – 3.30pm – Staying safe online – Augusta Library

November 19, 10 – 11.30am – Staying safe online

December 1, 10 – 11.30am – Android or Apple, what is what?

December 17, 10 – 11.30am – Get face-to-face online. How to contact loved ones and friends through video calls

The sessions are free and everyone is welcome, but RSVP is essential. Contact the library on 9780 5600 or email: abrawls@amrshire.wa.gov.au.

We encourage people to bring their own devices to the session, however, it’s not essential. Please let staff know if you don’t have a device when you RSVP. Sessions are at Margaret River Library unless otherwise noted.

Romano-British burials: a history talk by Dr Pam Lynch

Dr Pam Lynch has a fascination for all eras of UK history and archaeology, has taken part in an archaeological dig on a Roman Palace site in the south of England and for her PhD thesis she undertook a study of Romano-British burials. She is intrigued by the light that can be shed on an ancient civilization through an examination of its burial practices.

Come along and be captivated by the archaeological discoveries, their interpretation and the extent to which this ancient population can be understood.

Resume development and cover letter writing: a career enhancement workshop with Aly Bannister

Thursday 30th September, 3 – 4.30pm

This workshop shows you what a good resume should look like and describes the do’s and don’ts of what to include and what to leave out.

  • Helps you understand what employers expect from a resume
  • Describes why some resumes are unsuccessful
  • Offers you free templates and clear cover letters to use in the future
  • Gives you insights on how to get your resume noticed
  • Explains the essential ingredients when creating your resume
  • Aims to help increase your chances of success for securing employment

Search for the Queen of Sheba Orchid presentation

Beautiful Orchids of the South West

Dr Daniela Scaccabarozzi presents strategies that orchids in South Western Australia employ for attracting insects that fascinatedly pollinate orchid flowers. She is a pollination biologist currently investigating the pollination strategy of the Queen of Sheba Orchid. Her presentation is followed by a film screening of the documentary ‘Search for the Queen of Sheba Orchid’.(duration approx. 1 hr).
The documentary movie is presented by The Field Journal & Sarasota Orchid Society. World-renowned orchid taxonomist and artist Stig Dalstrom and award-winning filmmaker and composer Darryl Saffer travel to Western Australia seeking unique plants and animals that inhabit this amazing land. They are especially interested in finding the rare and elusive Queen of Sheba Orchid. After the screening, Daniela will welcome any questions inherent to the topic.

Want to know more about My Health Record? How does it work, and is it a good choice for you?

The Augusta and Margaret River Libraries, are offering Digital Health Literacy information sessions to:

  • Increase people’s knowledge about My Health Record; and
  • Enable users to make informed decisions about whether it’s something they would like to access.

There will be special sessions for over 50s, at which people will also have the opportunity to enrol in the BeConnected program to further their general digital skills.

Pioneers of the Western Australian Timber Industry: a talk by Don Briggs

Thursday 17th June, 5.30pm – 6.30pm at the Margaret River Library

Author Don Briggs offers a glimpse into the history of the WA timber trade including the periods of exploration, the settlement at King George Sound, the Swan River Colony, the forests of the South West and the people who made it happen. His research reveals lots of local places and names with lovely old images as well.

Don is the author of ‘Pioneers of the Western Australian Timber Industry’ and the biographical work ‘The Busettis of Cowaramup’. Both titles are in stock at the Margaret River and Augusta Libraries.

What is Jazz? A music history talk by Serge Le Goueff

International jazz saxophonist and jazz educator Serge Le Goueff invites you to join him on his presentation “What is Jazz?” He brings to light the myths as well as the many truths that have contributed to shaping Jazz music over the past century. This lecture aims to bring clarity to how Jazz came to be. Through time, starting from the late 16th century all the way to today. It is an exploration of how different cultures (musically and geographically) have contributed to the making of the art form we know as Jazz today.

Book illustration workshop at the Augusta Library

Wednesday 14th April, 1 – 4pm

This 3 hour illustration workshop is an interactive introductory course exploring children’s book art. Discover methods for designing characters, creative drawing systems and the step-by-step process in creating an illustration. Gabriel Evans also presents informative and entertaining insights into being a successful children’s picture book illustrator and author. Listed are covers of some of his latest publications.
