Getting closer to opening (carefully)!

As many of you are aware, the State Government is permitting libraries to ease some restrictions to public access from 18 May. We are missing you all and very excited to be edging closer towards greater contact with our community.

However, please don’t rush to your library first thing Monday – we’re not quite ready yet!

The changes to Shire Library Services will be incremental. At this point, there are still restrictions on how many people can be within the libraries at once, and what they can do while there. We are also required to continue with the quarantine of items, sanitising of surfaces, and social distancing.

We’re still working on the new processes that will allow us to open while complying with all the new safety requirements. It’s a surprisingly big job! And very important that we get that right before we usher you back into the building.

We’re aiming to open as soon as possible – but please note that only the Margaret River branch will open initially. Due to the small size of the Augusta Library, services there will remain unchanged for now. Your health and safety is our prime consideration, and we thank you for your understanding as we protect our local community.

In the meantime, the following services remain available from both the Augusta and Margaret River Libraries:

  • The libraries continue to provide the Click & Collect service, allowing the community access to print materials and DVDs. Find out more about how to use this service here: https://amrlibraries.com/2020/03/30/your-takeaway-library-has-arrived-click-collect-is-here-at-last/
  • Wifi is freely available from the library car parks and verandahs. The password is currently: authorevents.
  • The after-hours chutes remain open 24/7.
  • E-resources including e-books, e-audiobooks and movie-streaming are freely available to all library members.
  • You can still join the library over the phone!
  • Staff are onsite and ready to assist via phone or email if you have any difficulties or queries with the above services: amrlibrary@amrshire.wa.gov.au / 9780 5600

Stay tuned – we’ll update this blog as soon as there is news!!

A day at the library

Thank you to our community for your kind messages of support, and also for your patience as we work through the enormous number of Click & Collect requests we are receiving. Please keep requesting – we are very happy to be supporting our community. We don’t want anybody to be stuck at home without entertainment and/or inspiration during these times.

We thought you’d enjoy a peek at what’s happening behind closed doors at the libraries at the moment…

The Click & Collect ‘Takeaway Library’ initiative has been a huge success. Prior to the closure, on an average day the library staff would receive up to 25 requests for items via the catalogue per day, across both branches. In the 2 weeks since we began Click & Collect, staff at Margaret River and Augusta have received over 1,000 requests via the catalogue! And that’s not counting the requests that are coming in via phone calls and emails from people who don’t have internet access or are otherwise unable to place holds themselves. So far, we’ve had over 200 individual pick-up visits to our Click & Collect door – a figure that increases by the hour.

We are desperately missing our wonderful shelving volunteers, who would normally save us several hours of shelving each day, but are not allowed to join us during the closure. They already know how much we appreciate them, but here’s another shout-out: our volunteers are awesome (and we miss you)!

We’re working with fewer staff than usual. Some of our older staff fall into the ‘at risk’ category and are keeping safe at home, while others have taken time off to look after their families.

Those of us who remain are grateful to contribute in a meaningful way to our community. You’ll see us through the windows, and if you’re wondering what we’re up to, here’s a typical day in the life of library staff during the time of Covid closure:

  • Gloves on! Empty the after-hours chute. All returned items are stacked on a table and the date noted. These items are quarantined for 10 days and won’t be touched again until that period is over. Then, gloves discarded and…
  • Time to check in all the items that were returned 10 days ago. This means putting each one through the Sorter, shelving them all (a BIG job, all hands on deck!), and identifying those with Holds. This process takes around 3 hours. Once that’s done, it’s time to…
  • Start retrieving all the items that have been requested overnight. Each item is checked out to the relevant patron, then…
  • We call every patron with items ready to collect. We send an email if we can’t reach you by phone. And while this is happening…
  • Click & Collect pick-ups are happening throughout the day, between 10am and 3pm. Staff are greeting patrons through the window, and placing their items on a table outside for a contact-free service. At the same time…..
  • Other members of the team are answering the phones and giving tutorials on-demand: how to search the catalogue, how to log in and place a hold, how to download an e-audiobook. These are all services we would once have demonstrated in person at the libraries. We’d like to congratulate the many patrons who have left their comfort zones while we teach them how to use the online library resources. However, for some patrons this simply isn’t an option and in those cases we are discussing their needs and placing the requests for them. Then suddenly…
  • The day is over and it’s time to go home – whew!

While patron assistance and Click & Collect take priority over all else, when time permits we are also:

  • Continuing to receive and process new items. This means unpacking, covering, stamping, and adding the record to the catalogue so you can find and request it.
  • Responding to the many emails and queries that continue to come in – and the several-per-day knocks and queries at the windows!
  • Selecting and packing up ‘mystery’ bundles for those who would usually browse the shelves in person and are unsure of what they’d like.
  • And of course, writing up posts like this to keep you all informed about the services that are available to you!

Please let all your friends, family and wider circle know about the library services that are available during the closure.

Stay safe (and sane) and let us know if you need assistance with any library services.

Your TAKEAWAY LIBRARY has arrived – Click & Collect is here at last!

The Margaret River Library welcomed the community back into the library from Tuesday 26 May, and Augusta Library is open from the 4 August (click here for the new opening days and hours) – but we will continue to offer Click & Collect to our community.

Patrons can use Click & Collect via any of these 3 methods:

1 – Log in, search the catalogue, and place a Hold directly. Click here to go directly to the catalogue. Never placed a Hold via the catalogue before? Click here for instructions.

2 – Send an email to us with your request. Please let us know your name, phone number and your pick-up branch. Send your email to: amrlibraries@gmail.com

3 – Call us on 9780 5600. We’ll assist you to place holds on specific items. If you’re not sure what you want, we are happy to bundle up a selection based on your area of interest.

Once your items are ready for collection, you’ll receive an automated email and/or SMS notifying you that the item is ready for pick-up. Please ensure we have your correct contact details so you don’t miss out on this important notice!

You can then come to the library during open hours, and either:

  • Come inside, collect your item from the Hold shelf, and check it out to yourself; or
  • Come to the back door, ring the doorbell (knock for Augusta) and staff will check the item out and hand it to you.

Your library loans have been renewed

We realise you may have been worried about your library items over the shutdown period, and wanted to let you know that all items will be automatically renewed until 30 June, and will then be further renewed if necessary. For now, please disregard any notifications you may have received regarding due-back or pick-up dates. There will be no administration fees for overdue items during the shutdown.

You may continue to return your items through our after hours chute at either Margaret River or Augusta library if you wish, as we have instigated a quarantine process for the after-hours chutes.

Stay tuned for information about Click & Collect – we are developing a safe procedure to enable our community to access the library collection. We will also release more information about how to access a range of online services to enjoy from home, including educational resources.

Please share this news with your family and friends, and encourage everybody to follow this blog if they wish to stay up-to-date with availability of Library Services.

If you have any queries or concerns, please call us on 9780 5600.

Shire Libraries closed for an indefinite period in response to COVID-19

The Margaret River and Augusta Libraries are now closed for an indefinite period in response to COVID-19 threat.

Earlier today Shire of Augusta Margaret River Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Addison-Brown announced the Shire will be ceasing to deliver non-essential, public-facing services in a bid to preserve both staff and community safety as the COVID-19 public health emergency continues to unfold.

The Shire libraries are working towards finding new ways of serving our community whilst closed to the public and all new initiatives will be announced on our blog.

Subscribe to our blog amrlibraries.com for more updates, news and information on your local library service.

Library members can also access e-resources  from our website including e-books, e-audiobooks, e-magazines, language, English as a Second Language and resume help, stream movies and many others suitable for children and youth. Use your library card barcode to login and check out our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) if you need assistance.

Keep reading and smiling!

An update on your library service

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Library Service has been reviewing and changing its operations in response to the Federal Government’s announcements on COVID-19.

Our Libraries are taking measures to minimise the contamination risk of COVID-19 to staff and members very seriously.

  • We would like to stress the importance of the role of libraries in maintaining the welfare of our communities and staff during times of crisis.
  • We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and are following WA Health & Federal government guidelines.
  • Mitigating risk whilst remaining open for our community is our priority.

Our Current Plan is to …

  • Provide a positive and welcoming community space.
  • Operating hours stay the same for the time being.
  • Events and programs will be postponed until further notice
  • Library staff are wiping public desks, Print Release and photocopier, iPAC computers, SmartServes etc at least an extra three times a day, in addition to our usual cleaning services.
  • Encouraging people to use card services for payment of services
  • Encouraging people to take out 30 items as per current loan policy.
  • Public PC users are encouraged to use antiseptic wipes on the keyboard and mouse prior to use.
  • Public wifi available.
  • E-services are available 24/7.
  • COVID-19 literature in multi languages is on display.
  • Community jigsaw puzzle unavailable at present however there are plenty of jigsaws available for loan.

The Federal Government’s position is that  as long as we follow social distancing advice, have no more than 100 people in a single enclosed space and have good cleaning practices in place our facilities can remain open.

The health and safety of our members, customers and staff is our highest concern at this time. The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Library Services will provide regular updates to members on the changing situation.
